In 19 78, the gay freedom day parade organizers heard a call from one of their leaders for a timeless symbol to represent their movement. The rainbow has all the colors in it, that a rainbow flag would represent all people. By 19 79, paramount flag company, a local flag company h a long heritage in san francisco, and a retail store on polk street, one of the main gay streets in San Francisco started selling rainbow flags.
