The German Chancellor's Decision to Support Austria-Hungary
Sazinov told the Austrians and Italians that Russia no longer supported the idea of Serbia getting a port on the Adriatic. The British ambassador said, Sazinov is so frequently changing his ground that it is difficult to follow the successive phases of pessimism and optimism through which he passes. Meanwhile, Franz Ferdinand and General Shemwah, who's the temporary replacement for Conrad von Hötzendorf as chief of staff, they go to Berlin to ask for German support in case of Russian attack. Germany still thinks that they can, you know, wean Britain away from their alliance with France. Plus Germany doesn't want to see the Ottoman Empire destroyed.
