The Cuban Revolution in the 1930s and 1940s

Hensio Batista had carried out another coup very much with support and encouragement from the US establishment. Fidel Castro was already working rather as a lawyer trying to help some of the poor constituents around Havana in the poorer areas. He was allied with a man called Eduardo Shubas who was leading a new party, which is the main purpose was to expose corruption. But when you have a country where most of the productive activity is controlled by foreigners, it limits the channels through which the national nationals can get rich. And so in a way it absolutely embeds corruption and patronage and raft and all the rest of it.
