Women had become the cultural standard by the late Bronze Age and then comes in Dionysus. The women who participate in his rites were carried away in rapture intoxicated by the wine of Dionysus tearing animals apart and dancing wild dances. Euripides tells the story of King Pentheus who was simply indignant that his own mother was out there in the hills raging around with these wild ecstatic women. He goes out to spy on them in the hills at night to see what they're doing even though he has been warned to stay away and in a wild moment not recognizing him they tear him apart.
