i think it might be important to make sure that students see the connection between those things and that it's a transparent process which i know is something you've advocated in terms of your work on assessment absolutely. talking with students about why you're doing things and how it's good for them makes a huge difference. add one thing because this is something that i always see happen when people first start using some kinds of alternative grading just for yourself write a really quick list of what you think the major topics are in your class aim for 10 to 20 things that are the important things to get out of the class.
