How Long Have You Been Working on a Book?

I've actually written seven books in that period, three of which now have been published. I always knew what the book was about, which was about a sense of place. My models were first winesburg, ohio, and then after that, cannery row,. A lot of it's due to steinbeck's experiences in the war. He came back haunted by death. And if you read that book and you start looking for the number of corpses that come through in th book, it's staggering.
