Greek and Roman writers of rhetoric are united in seeing Demosthenes as the greatest orator of all times. One theory was very much about the style of his speech. He could combine speaking clearly in the plain style with all the charm of rhetoric in the middle style, but he could bring out those passionate thunderbolts in the grand style. And it's partly because of Cicero's championing of Demosthene that later in sort of the 4th century AD, when you've got Martianus Capella trying to create a whole encyclopedic knowledge of eloquence,. they are the two great voices.
