The Curve Regression Solution Is a Simplification of the Problem
The process starts with segmenting the image converting pixel level information into curve parameters and then you apply what mathematicians have been doing for like probably the past century which is regression. Then of course on that curve you can estimate the depth so there is no more flat ground assumption because you can already reason into the space in an estimated through the space after you have performed regressions. The only thing i have to do if it's a straight line is for example you know learning the or estimating the angular coefficient of that curve and i'm good to go.
