Machin's Anti-Intellectual Propaganda
Machin was trying to defend the intellectual aspects of the faith, which is one of the reasons why doctrine would have been so important to him. He came up against evangelical Presbyterians and some of his biggest opponents were not liberals, but evangelicals. So that's where Machin was coming from.
