The idea of sympathy was really born by thinking about what we would expect in a society where mesogeny proliferates. And the answer, i think, is that they'll tend to be a parallel system of forgiving, exonerating and sympathizing with men who behave in mesogonistic ways. So if we police and punish women for violating patriorchal nomes and expectations, then one quickly observes that punishment and forgiveness, or system of punishment and sympathetic reactions often go hand in hand.
