The Battle of Carthage

In 146 BC, Scipio ordered a full attack and the walls were breached. By this point, of the 700,000 citizens of Carthage, only about 50,000 remained. According to legend, the Romans then plowed the fields around Carthage with salt so that nothing could ever grow there again. The account gained widespread acceptance and served as a cautionary tale for future generations.
