In the grand sweep of roman history, nero has an above average reign in terms of how long he ruled. He wasn't so spectacularly awful in his time that he required immediate elimination from the scene. A slow slide towards autocracy, a slow slide towards maglamania, over a long period of time. Why? Maybe that does go to the idea that power corrupts.
