There are some people for whom a more autocratic model of society is appealing, but there aren't two models in that same way. It isn't as if there are sort of ideological poles around which people are gathering. None of them has a clear ideological appeal, except I may be to tiny groups of people in the Western democracies. And so it's more as if people in the West have learned tactics rather than that they have learned or admired an ideology.

In this third episode of Martin Wolf’s series, the renowned FT columnist and economist speaks to the journalist and historian Anne Applebaum, who has written extensively about the history of communism and the development of civil society in central and eastern Europe. Drawing on arguments in Martin’s latest book, The Crisis of Democratic Capitalism, they discuss what lies behind a global rise in autocracy and what can be done to counter it.
