John Avlon's partner was killed in a helicopter ski accident two years ago. He decided he wanted to write the story and met author Josh Galertner, who helped him do research. "Almost all the stories in it are true" but they're put together in a way that is somewhat fictional, says Avlon. The book is about a three-and-a-half or four-hour read.
