The Battle of Shiloh by Toby Foote
Of 425 men of the 6th Mississippi who engaged at Shiloh, only about 100 emerged alive. The young private in the novel recounts his confrontation with a big yank wearing his coat unbuttoned halfway showing a red flannel shirt underneath. His bayonet somehow finds its way under the chin of this large man. A moment of experiencing the other and extinguishing the other at the very same instant.
