The film is very dark and upsetting in a lot of ways. But there is something sort of cathotic about the way in which susan chooses to escape this marriage and be with carmilla, even in death. These women were in bad situations before the vampires ever showed up. The vampire is giving them a different way, a nice hopeful of living physically. I think that'swhy i see carmillas, like you said, the rescuer, the saviour, the avenger in this movie.
