Early Buddhist Discourses - The Pali Canon
Buddhism died out in India in the 12th century. All those other versions of the early Buddhist discourses disappeared without a trace. That is really humbling for Buddhists to think about, but some disappeared in India. Some monks took on the job of remembering a whole chunk of these teachings and passing them on to the next group of monks and nuns. For 400 years, before they eventually were written down around the turn of the common era in Sri Lanka. Since then, of course, they've been written down and there's a whole scribal tradition.
