In the US, Wall Street and private banks play an outsized role in monetary policy. Hong Kong is becoming a big financial center for various reasons. A good example too would be someone like Steve Schwartzman of Black Stone Capital. He's super influential, for example, in China. And so weird things that I was writing about in the 1990s were related to tech transfer from U.S. military to China.
