CHAPTER

What I Like About Plato's Vision of Justice

The received definition of justice is that it is giving everyone what they deserve. But socrates assumes, as he's doing these thought experiments with glaucon and antamantus, you mean giving them what jobs and what responsibilities they deserve. He said very early on, even when we were in the dramatic prologue, socrates has said that every art, whatever you learn, whether it piloting a ship or healing people,. You're not takg care of yourself. You're taking care of someone else. And this is one thing i love about the republic. Hisdefinition of justice is its the best co ordination of everyone needing and caring for each other.
