The Origins of the Bulgarian Nation
There were not really clear ethnic boundaries and ethnic groups until well into the 20th century when you have mass education. Even the Bulgarians at this point weren't well-defined as the group. So, these groups would have been most identified themselves by their religion. And even to this day, we don't have a cohesive identity of, you know, sort of a mobilized ethnic identity of we are pro-mucks.
