The Importance of Open Source
Open source means a program is available for you to read, but also accepting patches from other people. You're kind of then collaborating on a piece of software that any of the fixes that you make are available to everyone else who uses it. Something like that in a proprietary system where you can't get access to the source code would never happen. With an open source project, it can continue to live on and take on whole new meanings as more and more people use it.
