Using Mixtures to Model Complex Multimodal Distributions

Mixtures are a tool to model complicated, multimodal distributions that you say they can't take the form of a gaushan or expodential family. You kind of build them by combining simpler pieces and weighting the simpler pieces. Each of the groups of this mixture have very absolutely no meaning, like they don't have any physical interpretation. But what does have a physical interpretation is this sort of marginalized value. So mixtures are really deep, but they're plagued with complicated problems.
