In 1939 90% of the US audience was white. In 1960s scholars like Kenneth Stamp started to have a realization that this depiction of the civil war and of reconstruction as a corrupt period where Yankees came and meddled in the south was not telling most of the story. The dominant discourse among white scholars is saying the civil war was the struggle that defamed the south. It was a tragedy that the south had to undergo reconstruction. You know right now I believe that gone with the wind compared to us is a shorter distance or maybe it's it's now a longer distance than gone with the Wind compared to the civil war but it's about a midway point.
