If you quote anybody before Luther, you're going to be quoting it. Lewis said it's the direct experience of God as concrete as a taste or a color. Often you can contemplate God. You can do theology. But he was very interested in direct experiences of God. He loved them in the Bible. And that is partly what led him to initiate the Reformation.
