Hugo, a Young Royalist

Hugo was a committed royalist when he was young. His hero was chateau briand, a romantic poet and essayist who had descended from an old aristocratic family. Hugo idolized him but soon became devoted to republican causes. He published five vol s of poetry in ten years, from age 20 to age 30 or so. The death penalty and slavery were two causes that hugo was extremely passionate about.
