The History of the Brouronia Festival
Brouron was one of the 12 ancient settlements of Attica, and one of the Attic towns united under Athens into one polis. Many statues of young children, both boys and girls, were dedicated to Brouronia. These were apparently given in thanks for the children's survival because mortality rates were highest in the first few years of life. The tyrant by Cystretis was Brouronion by birth, and he has credited with transferring the cult to the Acropolis.
