What Are Normal Faults?

Quakes are a key part of understanding and monitoring volcanic eruptions. You could almost daily see the progression of this magma moving to the surface in La Palma. And that's enough for them to warn people, move people out of the way. So when you get one of those oceanic plates cut as subducting, the boundary between those two plates is effectively a gigantic fault zone. These can be thousands of kilometers long, hundreds of wide. The locations where these earthquakes take place have been linked to big tsunamis like Sumatra or Japan.
