The russian socialist federation withdrew from world war one. At that point the germans demanded huge concessions from russia. There was a big debate going on inside the bolshevik party over whether or not the new socialist government should make these concessions to german imperialism. Lenon's argument was, look, we don't have an army. We just had a revolution to get out of the war. So we have to give in to germany. And because there was paralysis at the top of this new socialist government, and lenon lost the vote inside the a bureau, by the way, they refused to sign the treaty at brest litovsk.
