CHAPTER

The Importance of Ethical Arguments in Disability Law

It's standard practice in neonatal intensive care units, pretty much everywhere, that if a child is born with a very severe disability, doctors will ask parents whether they want to put the child on life support or not. But you can understand that Germans were sensitive about the suggestion that anyone might be justifiably killed because of their disabilities. So that's when it became controversial, and I was somewhat surprised by that. It took even longer to become controversial in English-speaking countries because there wasn't a militant disability movement at that time.
