The History of the Colossus in Rhodes
There was a huge earthquake in Rhodes. The size of an earthquake needed to push the land up 14 feet. And we know how much the land went up and when that happened from looking at sea level notches along the North Coast coast of Rhodes. But I imagine that the corrosion probably of the statue with an iron core and bronze exterior would have corroded quite readily. Even relatively small earthquakes would have certainly damaged it, partly brought it down.
