The Relationship Between Kin-Based Practices and Correlations in Institutional Quality
The idea is that if you're in a society based on these local kin-based ties, you have really strong incentives to help your kin at the expense of others. This can manifest itself as corruption when you kind of pair these norms with a modern political system or a modern state. And so what we find and what we document is that there's a really strong correlation between the rate at which cousin marriage is observed in a society and the amount of corruption that you observe. We showed that that's associated with the rate of a corruption at the regional level today.
