A good loser was magnanimous, if not unmoved, settling debts in a timely and ostentatious fashion. The authorities soon grew concerned that wagering posed a threat to national prosperity. On the other side were those like beau nash who either had their livelihoods entwined with the profits of the gaming tables or could not imagine their lives without them.
