The Importance of Redeeming Dollars for Gold
The Bretton Woods system was put in place during World War II. The international gold standard was dead, because other currencies were backed by dollars. In the 1960s, the Fed stops behaving as though this is an important constraint. They start issuing more money than is consistent with maintaining redemption at $35 an ounce.
