The Problem With Al-Zerian Marxism
Al-Zerian Marxism, of course, was my position for a long time and I was pretty hardcore about it. But whenever it came to the question of consciousness and subjectivity, I always assumed that was a problem that it would get round to solving. Unless there is fundamentally a capacity for rational freedom in the human subject, which is part of what it means to be a conscious being, then you don’t really have Marxism. It's not good enough to talk about bad subject formation because that just introduces a note of indeterminacy.
