The Narcissus Dilemma
Narcissism is a sort of extreme, very pathological, narcisistic defence. When some one's confronted with evidence that threatens their view of themselves they interpret it as hostility and integrate it into a broader conspiracy. Many of the greatest, most sensitive novelists and artists have been narcissus. People say narcissus are incapable of empathy, or understanding the feelings of others. The narcissus cannot, just can't do that's not how their mind arranges things. That's what they're doing imagining themselves in that position.
