The observation protocols have done for me. The one that I'm most familiar with is a variation on the COPIS, which that one is looking at who is talking and what questions are being asked. This one is designed to be more culturally responsive. It's not just who's talking in general, but specifically so that I could find out someone who is either doing self observation or inviting a peer to do so. You might not know that you're doing that until you were using a protocol that could share that kind of information.
