Everything that happened in the world after 1914 in some sense happened because of 1914. The rise of this hyper-nationalism, the collapse of European self-confidence and the collapse of traditional forms of government are just a few examples. And then something else began to come clear in my hand. I remembered how the late great Jean Kirkpatrick used to say that the 20th century really didn't run from 1900 to 1901 to 1999 to 2000.
