Marriage and Multilingualism in Australia
Stable, small scale community multilingualism is absolutely the norm and nation states are like a weird aberration. In northern Australia you had a long held tradition that all languages were placed in their own country. And then if you were born into a language, you had ownership of that language. But it's different to have a language that is yours and that you speak compared to a language that you speak because it belongs to someone else. The idea of having a plurisentric norm where everyone's being exposed to multiple languages and marrying multilingual is a very different way from how I'm used to approaching this issue.
