In most of her writing, Hurston is distinct from many of her peers. She doesn't romanticize any kind of culture, including southern, poor, black culture. By this point in time, she had established herself as an econoclast among the Harlem Renaissance. And it also is fascinating because since she's approaching all these things, it's kind of the long view of anthropology.
