The Effects of Tritium on the Marine Environment
The decision to dump the contaminated water into the ocean is not just a domestic issue of Japan. The National Association of Marine Laboratories issued a position paper which states that there is a lack of adequate and accurate scientific data supporting Japan's assertion of safety. Jamie Quinton, head of the School of Natural Sciences at Massey University, said that the original unprocessed wastewater contained isotopes that were being used in nuclear medicine radio therapy. They have sufficient energy to cause cell death and mutation.
