Judith Sergeant Murray and the Struggle for Female Independence
Judith Sergeant Murray spent the last years of her life in a slave state being cared for and supported by an enslaved work force. She died in Natchez, Mississippi on July 6th, 1820 at the age of 69. In 1984, Unitarian Universalist Minister Gordon Gibson found her letterbooks containing her copies of thousands of letters. The historian who has done the most work with these so far is Sheila L. Schimp.
