The Importance of the Military in Mexico's War on Drugs

The war on drugs features very prominently in your book and Amlo famously end or publicly ended the war on drugs. A lot has been made of the fact that the military has gained an even more prominent role within Amlo's administration. The deployment of the military to all of these cities in around 2006 was concurrent with a massive spike in the new homicides, right? So I think he was very justified in trying to put an end to this, right? And so he did so in 2019. But it tells you how the military had its inertia of fighting the drug war and disobeyed directly the presidential policy by ending all operations.
