The Role of Financial Advice in the Mortgage Industry

Financial advice that is assumed to be good can be great, but it needs to be affordable enough. What considerations does a household need to make to optimally select a mortgage contract? If you are in a relatively stable financial position and like predictability of payment, then a fixed rate mortgage is attractive. Finally, if you are a wealthy middle-aged person who has a big house and a financial portfolio, you may want to lever your financial portfolio in effect.

And all too often the people who end up making the most costly financial mistakes are those who can least afford to do so. But what exactly needs to change in order for more people to make wise and well-informed financial decisions? And how do we go about implementing those changes? Campbell, a British-American economist, professor of economics at Harvard, and founding partner at Arrowstreet Capital, a systematic asset management firm based in Boston.
