Until I went to medical school, my interaction with non-English speaking upper-middle class people was very limited. It took me a long time to get over that prejudice, thinking that in India, only people that can speak English are worth talking to. So, then I had to make a conscious effort to actually start talking to people and talk about lots of serious stuff in Punjabi, Hindi or English. However, I speak more Punjabi now than when I lived in Amritsar which is so weird. About 60, 70% of my patient load is from either side of Punjab.
