The choose life speech is one of those things that I think people knew even though if they hadn't seen the movie. The idea that there was this monologue that was not unlike the first rule of Fight Club sort of line became pretty well known, even if people weren't a huge Scottish fiction guy. So much of the 90s were about the collision between artists or public figures expressing rebellious idiosyncratic rage against the machine viewpoints and the machine working as fast as it could to co up them and rebrand them and sell them back to you.
