CHAPTER

Abigail Alcott and Charles Lane in a Physical Harvest

Catherine Shortliff says Abigail Alcott is much more of a realist than her husband. She sees that the Fruitlanders don't have what they need to keep warm or even feed themselves. They are in linen sheaves in a farmhouse in Massachusetts and don't have the proper stores for the winter, so they really did need to leave for safety and for survival. Catherine Shortliff: We have this perfect contrast. Bronson Alcott was physically ill. Seriously, he's also emotionally distraught. That second harvest doesn't go well. People think Fruitlands is funny, and even worse, nobody signed up.
