The Promise of God to Abram
God has a pattern of like, I'm going to make things happen in such a way where you know it's me. And so not having a son in this narrative means that it can seem as if God's promise to Abram is being threatened. So I think it's significant to recognize that God's promise involves and hinges on the procreation of a son.
