Our mental experience is comprised of two separate and distinct systems. System one is an intuitive, heuristic driven system that's very imprecise but fast. The other is a more directed way of thinking which takes up some of your capacity. When you ask someone to do a mental task that invokes system two they're muscles tense, their blood pressure and their heart rate rise,. Their pupils dilate, they start to perspire. It is hard work to think hard.
