Is There a Tradition in Music?

Extraordinarily radical essay. I don't always find myself hugely in sympathy with t. S eliot, but in this case it's a brilliant piece of writing. Is very short, and it just argues that you can't write anythi that's going to be of any interest to anyone unless you're absolutely steeped in the tradition. But what happens? Mendelssohn is very clever, and he basically says to gerta, look, i am going to play all this music,. And she writes to his friend selter, saying, well, at last i understand music. It makes sense, this idea of historical order and technical progress.
