In western european traditions, they started using the weather on candlemas day to predict the beginning of spring. In germany, in nova scotiam, it's called docks day, with docs being like the the german word for a badger. Sometimes also, though it's a fox or a bear, for our purposes, it can basically be any hibernating animal that goes into winter and then wakes up in the spring.
